Phosphorus

Tier 2 — promising · Bone · Energy metabolism · Cell function

The second most abundant mineral in the body, essential for bone formation, ATP production, and DNA synthesis. Dietary deficiency is rare in healthy adults because phosphorus is abundant in dairy, meat, fish, and processed foods — but clinically meaningful depletion is common after bariatric surgery, with prolonged antacid or PPI use, and in severe malnutrition or refeeding syndrome. Excess calcium supplements impair absorption, and chronic kidney disease reverses the concern entirely — restriction, not supplementation, is the priority.

Dose: 700 mg/day RDA from food or supplement; deficiency most common after bariatric surgery or long-term antacid use
