Nopal cactus / Prickly pear (Opuntia ficus-indica)

Tier 3 — weak evidence · Blood sugar · Hangover · Cholesterol

A traditional food and medicine used across Mexico and the American Southwest. Small trials show it modestly reduces post-meal blood sugar when consumed alongside carbohydrates. One well-known trial found prickly pear extract taken before drinking significantly reduced hangover severity. Also lowers cholesterol and triglycerides in small studies. Very safe as it is a commonly consumed food.

Dose: 500–1,000 mg/day cactus pad extract; take with meals for blood sugar; before drinking for hangover prevention
