Bifidobacterium infantis 35624
Tier 2 — promising · IBS · Bloating · Gut-brain axis
B. infantis 35624 (sold as Alflorex/Align) has a plausible mechanistic basis for IBS: O'Mahony et al. 2005 (Gastroenterology, PMID 15765388) showed it normalises the abnormal IL-10/IL-12 ratio seen in IBS patients, suggesting immune modulation. The landmark Whorwell 2006 RCT (362 women, PMID 16863564) found the 10^8 CFU dose significantly improved abdominal pain, bloating, and bowel function vs placebo. However, Yuan 2017 meta-analysis (5 studies, PMID 28166427) found monotherapy with 35624 alone did NOT achieve statistical significance for pain or bloating; composite probiotic formulas…
Dose: 1 × 10^8 CFU/day (standard commercial dose, e.g. Alflorex/Align capsule). Higher doses (10^10) were not more effective than placebo in the pivotal RCT. Take at the same time each day.
