Contains safrole, which is classified as a confirmed liver carcinogen by international cancer authorities. Safrole is also a precursor chemical for the illegal drug MDMA. FDA banned safrole as a food additive in 1960. Despite this, sassafras tea and root bark products are still sold in some markets. There is no safe dose for internal consumption.
