DHA (standalone, algal)
Tier 2 — promising · Brain · Pregnancy · Vegan
DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) is the primary structural omega-3 fatty acid in brain grey matter and the retina, comprising approximately 40% of brain polyunsaturated fatty acids. Algal DHA provides the identical molecule found in fish oil but is sourced from microalgae, making it the only evidence-based DHA option for vegans and vegetarians. It is the original marine source — fish accumulate DHA by eating algae. Evidence supports its use in pregnancy (300 mg/day during the third trimester supports fetal retinal and neural development), in infants, and for general vegan omega-3 sufficiency.…
Dose: 200–500 mg/day algal DHA for general maintenance; 300–600 mg/day during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Choose algal EPA+DHA blend if EPA is also needed.
