Camphor oil (oral)

Tier 4 — risky / avoid · Seizures · Organ failure · Fatal

Camphor is safe for topical use in products like Vicks VapoRub at low concentrations, but oral ingestion of camphor oil is extremely dangerous. As little as 2 grams can cause seizures in adults, and smaller amounts can be fatal in children. FDA banned camphor concentrations above 11 percent in consumer products in 1983. Sometimes found in traditional medicine products from Asia at dangerous concentrations.

Dose: AVOID oral ingestion entirely — seizures at 2 g in adults; fatal in children at lower doses
