Supplements to avoid with SSRIs

Talk to a pharmacist before you change anything.

This is an educational list of interactions tied to a public source. It is not a complete medication review and it is not medical advice. Ask a pharmacist, or the clinician who prescribes the medicine, before you start, stop, or change a supplement. A pair that is missing here is not a safety clearance. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and some other antidepressants do not mix safely with St. John's wort. The warning below is the pair we can cite. A short list is not a full medication review.

NCCIH also says St. John's wort can weaken some other antidepressants, including amitriptyline and bupropion. Those are not SSRIs. That pair is listed below so it is not hidden, and it is labeled as those drugs.

St. John's wort can cause serious serotonin effects with some antidepressants

NCCIH says taking St. John's wort with certain antidepressants, or with other drugs that affect serotonin, may lead to increased serotonin-related side effects, and that those effects can be serious. SSRIs and SNRIs are drugs that affect serotonin. Do not combine them with this herb unless the prescriber has already told you to. Depression itself needs a clinician, not a self-started herb.

St. John's wort can weaken amitriptyline and bupropion

NCCIH lists amitriptyline and bupropion among the medicines St. John's wort can weaken. That is a different problem from serotonin toxicity: the herb can make the body clear some drugs faster, so the medicine does less. Do not add the herb to either drug on your own.
