Psyllium for cholesterol
Psyllium husk lowers total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol in the 2024 systematic review of Plantago trials. Take it with a full glass of water, start low if you bloat, and separate it from medicines by a couple of hours so it does not carry them through. It is a fiber, not a statin. People with swallowing problems or bowel narrowing should not start a bulking fiber.
Psyllium husk is the soluble fiber behind a lot of "cholesterol fiber" claims. The useful version is the husk itself, not a blend of ten powders.
The 2024 review
Zhu and colleagues, at Jilin University, systematically reviewed Plantago intake and found lower total cholesterol and lower LDL cholesterol in adults (PMID 38688104, Nutrition Research). That is a food-fiber result. It does not replace a statin for someone whose clinician has already prescribed one, and it does not justify a megadose.
How to take it
The trials use grams of husk per day, split, always with water. Taken dry, it can swell and obstruct. It can also bind other medicines, so leave a gap between psyllium and pills. Gas is the usual early effect and often fades if the dose rises slowly. One ingredient is the whole intervention. Added laxative stimulants are a different and harsher product.
