Butyrate (calcium/magnesium)

What it is

A short-chain fatty acid produced by gut bacteria fermenting fibre. Supplemental butyrate (calcium or magnesium salt) supports gut barrier integrity and reduces intestinal inflammation. Small trials show benefit in ulcerative colitis and IBS. Enteric-coated capsules preferred for colonic delivery. Has an unpleasant odour — keep container tightly sealed.

300–1,200 mg/day calcium or magnesium butyrate; enteric-coated for colonic delivery

Time of day & tips

Take 2–3× daily with meals. Use enteric-coated capsules for colonic delivery. Uncoated versions have a very unpleasant smell — keep tightly sealed.
