Artichoke extract (Cynara scolymus)

Liver · Digestion · Cholesterol
Tier 2 — Promising

What it is

Artichoke leaf extract has moderate evidence for lowering LDL cholesterol and improving symptoms of indigestion. A 2018 Cochrane-style review found it reduced total cholesterol by roughly 10 to 15 percent in mildly elevated cases. It also stimulates bile production, which can ease bloating and discomfort after fatty meals. Very safe with minimal side effects in trials lasting up to 12 weeks.

Dose

600–1,800 mg/day standardised artichoke leaf extract, taken with meals

Time of day & tips

Take with meals to stimulate digestion. Avoid if you have gallstones — it increases bile flow. Morning or before the largest meal of the day works well.
