Tributyrin (gut barrier, targeted)
Tier 2 — promising · Gut barrier · IBS · Microbiome support
Tributyrin delivers butyric acid directly to the intestinal epithelium where it fuels colonocytes and maintains tight junctions. Unlike sodium butyrate, tributyrin is odourless and survives gastric acid. Small pilot trials (Banasiewicz 2013 and others) suggest tributyrin improves gut permeability markers and bowel symptoms in IBS-D and IBD patients. Also being studied for colorectal cancer prevention.
Dose: 300–900 mg/day tributyrin in divided doses; start with 300 mg and increase after one week
